No health without mental health

Stigma towards disabled people has been highlighted as one predicting factors for over-diagnosis and more negative prognoses. The presented study aimed to explore patterns of association between explicit stigma (via self-reported scales) and implisit stigma (computer-based response-latency task) towards individuals with physical vs. mental disabilities. Results indicated that (1) participants did not report any explicit stigma towards physically disabled and mentally ill persons; however (2) implicit stigma was revealed towards both targets, with (3) higher levels of implicit stigma directed to those who are mentally ill. These ambivalent attitudes should be taken into consideration in the development of health promotion campaign and educational programs.
